Casting Procedures
Casting should be done by a veterinarian or other qualified person with direct knowledge of casting. All responsibility for the well being of the animal is in the hands of the person taking the cast.
1. Select the appropriate casting kit from our chart.
You should have fiberglass casting tape, nylon stockinette,
flexible tubing, scissor, ink pencil, and a pair of gloves.
2. Remove the contents from the toolbox and fill the toolbox with room
temperature water. 65 to 75 degrees F or 20 to 24 C
3. Position the leg as you would want it to be in the brace if possible. If
not, please make us aware that it needs further correction
4. Place the tubing along the length of the area to be casted. Have some
help holding it in place or use a string to tie it up
5. Moisten the nylon stockinette and pull over the area to be casted.
6. Mark all bony prominences and areas of concern with the ink pencil
supplied
7. Pull on your pair of gloves to protect your hands from the resin in the
fiberglass tape
8. Open one package of fiberglass tape at a time and submerge in the
toolbox full of water at room temperature. Squeeze 3 times.
You have 3 to 5 minutes of working time.
9. Using traditional casting techniques, wrap up the area to be casted. 2 to
3 layers should be sufficient. Repeat step 8 if needed. Be
sure to rub close to the tube so that it does not bridge away
from the leg
10. Allow cast to cure until rigid. Using the scissor provided, cut the cast
off using the tube under the fiberglass cast. This is your cutting
channel. Using the tubing saves your animal the
chance of being nicked or cut. Write the animals name, your name and number on
the outside of the cast with a black marker along
with a filled out patient form.
11. Ship this cast to
